The Voice of April

The night of April 22 will be remembered by all Shanghainese. A six-minute video titled “The Voice of April” circulated on the WeChat Moments of Shanghainese. It was repeatedly deleted by the authorities, and the people of Shanghai relentlessly posted the same video over and over again.

Some people have compared this incident to the May Fourth Movement in 1919.

The footage in this video is a black and white shot of the city view of Shanghai. The audio part is some widely circulated phone recordings, conversations, calls for help and questions about control measures since this Covid outbreak in March. The video did not contain direct criticism of the government. Most people will think that this is just a record of Shanghai’s April epidemic with a slightly personal subjective view.

However, even such a relatively benign video cannot be tolerated by the authorities. People in Shanghai were outraged by the deletion. Nearly a month of strict lockdown measures have brought people’s emotions close to boiling point. Spontaneously, countless Shanghai people keep reposting the same video, which is very spectacular on WeChat Moments.

Today, there are shameless brainwashing articles published by some self-media, claiming that last night’s post deletion was triggered and implemented by AI. Fuck you. AI? Do you really think that the common people in Shanghai are all idiots?
